Victor Seixas

Vic Seixas was a star at UNC before going on to a long, successful career after college. He was the NCAA singles runner-up in 1947 and ’48, an impressive return to top form considering he’d spent more than three years as a pilot in the Army Air Corps prior to attending North Carolina. At UNC, Seixas won 63 of his 66 singles matches. From 1940-69, Seixas played in a record 28 U.S. National/Open tournaments, including 24 in a row from 1946-69. In his long career, he won two major singles titles, five men’s doubles majors and eight in mixed doubles. In 1966, at age 43, Seixas beat a 19-year-old Stan Smith in four sets. Seixas, a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. won the Wimbledon singles title in 1953 and the U.S. Nationals the following year. He was a member of seven U.S. Davis Cup teams, leading the Americans to the Cup in 1954. He celebrated his 100th birthday in 2023.
