Robert Lutz

Robert Lutz

One half of one of the greatest doubles teams of all time, and an excellent singles player as well, Bob Lutz won at a high level throughout his tennis career. He and Stan Smith won a pair of NCAA doubles titles for USC in the late 1960s — Lutz also won the 1967 singles title — before going on to win four U.S. Open doubles titles and an Australian Open. Southern Cal in the 1960s dominated NCAA singles and doubles, winning a combined 13 titles, and Lutz contributed his share with the singles title in ’67 and doubles titles with Smith in 1967-68. A few months after winning their second NCAA doubles title, Lutz and Smith won their first U.S. Open. They added three more titles in New York, in 1974, ’78 and ’80. In a show of impressive longevity, they won one of the biggest tournaments in tennis in three different decades. Lutz and Smith were also Davis Cup stalwarts, going a combined 13-1 in Cup play. In singles, Lutz won nine titles in his career and reached at least the fourth round of all four Grand Slams, including the semifinals of the 1971 Australian Open. In 2005, Lutz was inducted into the USC Athletics Hall of Fame, and in 2009, Lutz and Smith were inducted into the Southern California Tennis Association Hall of Fame.
