Bernard “Tut” Bartzen

As a player, Bartzen won an NCAA doubles title with Fred Kovaleski in 1948, and in singles, he won 50 matches in a row at one point. He also helped William & Mary win the NCAA team title in 1947 and ’48. After college, he was ranked among the top-10 U.S. men’s singles players for nine straight years, including No. 2 in 1959 and ’60. He won the U.S. clay court singles title four times and the doubles title twice. He was a member of five U.S. Davis Cup squads and went 15-0 in singles play. As a coach at TCU, Bartzen led the Horned Frogs from 1974-98. His teams compiled a record of 528-203, with 12 20-win seasons and NCAA semifinals appearances in 1989 and ’96, as well as reaching the ITA National Team Indoor finals in 1992. He was voted the Southwest Conference coach of the year six times and the ITA National Coach of the Year in 1992. Bartzen passed away in 2019 at age 91.
