John Conroy

During his three decades as Princeton’s head coach, John Conroy’s teams won 11 Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Association titles outright, shared four more, and won 52 straight dual matches from 1960-65. Conroy ended his career with a record of 270-38, including a win over Miami in 1964 that ended the Hurricane’s 137-match win streak. Conroy, who began his career at Princeton in 1939 as the varsity squash coach and assistant tennis coach, was named the men’s tennis head coach in 1942. He served as a Navy gunnery officer during World War II for three years before returning to coaching. In 1969, Conroy stepped down as the squash coach to serve as Princeton’s associate director of athletics. Conroy died in 1987 at age 79.
