Daniel Penick

A former Texas baseball pitcher in the late 1800s, Penick coached the Longhorns men’s tennis team from 1908-56, retiring at age 87. Texas won 26 Southwest Conference singles championships and 31 doubles titles during his career. Penick started out in 1908 as a volunteer coach and coached the team for free until the 1940s. Along with dominating the Southwest Conference, the Longhorns made their mark national with five NCAA doubles titles and two singles championships. During his long career, Penick did a lot more than just coach the Longhorns. He taught classical languages, religion and music at UT from 1920-55, and was the assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1928-40. He also served as president of the Southwest Conference from 1923-35.
