Chet Murphy

Chet Murphy and his twin brother Bill grew up on the South Side of Chicago, and they later starred for their hometown University of Chicago. In 1939, Murphy reached the finals of the NCAA singles and doubles (with Bill). The brothers teamed up to win a pair of Big 10 doubles titles, and Murphy also won the singles title during his career. After serving as a Naval pilot during World War II, Murphy got into coaching. He spent three years at Minnesota before going onto a 10-year run at Cal-Berkeley, where his teams twice finished third at the NCAAs and twice placed fifth. He also served as president of the Collegiate Coaches Association. Along with writing several books on tennis with his brother, Murphy also served as Director of Tennis at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colo., for 30 years. Murphy died in 2016 at age 98.
