BIOGRAPHY

One of the greatest coaches in collegiate tennis history, Toley fielded some of the most talented and dominant teams ever during his remarkable 27-year career. Coaching the mighty Trojans from 1954-80, Toley’s teams won 10 NCAA titles and posted a record of 430-92-4.

Not only was Toley part of the Hall of Fame’s inaugural class in 1983, so were three of his former players: Alex Olmedo, Rafael Osuna and Dennis Ralston. Two other legendary Trojans that played for Toley, Bob Lutz and Stan Smith, were inducted the following year. Toley clearly had an eye for talent: Osuna and Ralston won the Wimbledon doubles title in 1960, before beginning their collegiate careers.

In Toley’s 27 years leading USC, nine Trojans won NCAA singles championships and 12 duos won the doubles national title. When Inside Tennis magazine ranked the top collegiate teams of all time, Toley’s 1963 and 1967 teams were ranked Nos. 1 and 3, respectively.

After growing up in Los Angeles, Toley played for the Trojans less than a decade before he took over as coach. Along with coaching his USC squad, Toley also served as coach at the Los Angeles Tennis Club from 1947-72. Toley died in 2008 at age 91.
